Dental Bone Grafting at Smile Artistry!
Bone Grafting is required as a consequence of the bone loss caused by Tooth Loss and Gum Disease.
Dental Bone Grafting is the process of rebuilding lost bone structure.
Following the loss of a tooth, the bone in the area 'atrophies' (dissolves) away as a result of missing stimulation.
In areas where bone volume has been lost, Bone Grafting can rebuild the area to allow for Dental Implant Treatments to replace the missing tooth/teeth again.
There are many different types of Dental Bone Grafting:
Socket Bone Grafting
One of the easier and simpler forms of Dental Bone Grafting, Socket Grafts are placed into the space of a missing tooth at the time of extraction (removal) of the tooth or soon after. Many different graft types are commonly used, however the larger the defect the more important the type of product. The bigger sites, or more broken down sites require Autograft (Bone taken from another part of the mouth or body), and smaller areas may utilise allografts such as Mineross or Grafton, alloplasts or xenografts such as Biooss.
Sinus Grafting
Sinus Grafting is a very reliable and predictable form of dental bone grafting and is used in the Upper Jaw for the Back Teeth. Following Tooth Loss, the Maxillary Sinus enlargens and bone height is lost. To regain this loss of height of bone is relatively straight forward using Sinus Grafting which can regain 100% of the missing height required for Dental Implant Treatments. Bone types used are combinations of Autografts (own bone) and Allografts (another human). On occasions when larger amounts of boen are required, Bone may be taken from other parts of the body outside of the mouth.
Particulate Bone Grafting
Smaller areas of missing bone and gum volume are repaired with Particulate Bone Grafting. This means particles of bone are harvested typically from the Wisdom Tooth Areas of the mouth and used to repair defects around teeth and the missing tooth sites. Missing Gum Volume may also be rebuilt with Soft Tissue Grafting Procedures either before, simultaneously or after the Bone Grafting procedure.
Block Bone Grafting
Larger areas of missing bone and gum volume are repaired with Block Bone Grafting. This means blocks of bone are taken from other areas in the mouth, typically around wisdom tooth sites in the lower jaw, and under the lower front teeth or taken from areas outside of the mouth such as the hip. Healing is usually unremarkable, however difficulties usually arise in keeping pressure off the healing areas is important.

Computer Guided Dental Implants
With the new generation of Computer Aided Dental Implant Placement, Dentists are better able to plan and place dental implants in limited areas of bone. Whilst this form of dental implant treatment does not negate the need to have sufficient bone, it does aid the dentist in placing more implants in tighter areas with more precision, reducing the need to bone grafting in some circumstances. It does make Dental Implant Treatment safer by diagnosing and planning safer dimensions of Dental Implants to avoid Vital Structures such as blood vessels and Dental Nerves.
Computer Aided Dental Implant Placement begins first with having a 3D Scan taken of the jaws. The data is then uploaded onto the special computer software and virtual planning is commenced. Programs leading in this field are Simplant.
